This thread will be specific to the Xbox 360, because the old one was getting closer to 500 and is kinda old anyway.

    So:

Yes, I got mine. Yes, I think it is orgasmic.

It is slightly smaller than the original Xbox, slightly noiser too (when playing games). In the Dashboard and while watching DVDs (or streaming music, pictures, movies, whatever), it's extremely quiet. And no, it's not noticable over the volume of the game.

Here is a picture of how I have it set up. On the TV is "Gotham TV", a new feature of Xbox Live (in games that support it), commonly called Spectator Mode.

When you choose "Gotham TV" in PGR3, you are given two options: "Heroes Channel" and "Friends Channel". "Heroes Channel" lists the top ranked players currently playing, and Friends Channel lists your friends currently playing. You then select which ever game you want, and you're watching the race in real-time. The camera angles, the scrolling news feed at the bottom (which provides race details like lap times for all the players, new records set on other courses, etc), the captions, etc. all make it look like an authentic TV broadcast. I really love the "in-car" view, since all the cars have authentically modeled interiors too, and the camera shakes a bit since it's supposed to be mounted to the driver's helmet.

    The console itself.

The "Xbox 360" ($399US package) has the chrome drive cover, the "Xbox 360 core system" ($299US package) has a regular white plastic drive cover.

On the bottom left is the remote receiver, then two memory card slots, then the "wireless sync" button (you use this to synchronize the controllers and the system).

Next to that is the "ring of light." In the center is the power button, but the circlular light pattern around it is powered by 3 LEDs in each corner (Red, Blue, Green). In this case, only the top left green is on. This is to signify how many controllers are activate, Top Left is Player 1. When two are on, the top two quarters are green. This is programmable by each game. On the far right is the USB tray: there are two powered USB 2.0 ports behind there, and it's got a lever so you just push it down with the cable and plug in the USB device to the port.

At the very back on the left is the removable 20GB HD (serial ATA, 5400rpm, 2.5" laptop drive inside a simple enclosure).

When you press the "X" in the center of the controller (or on the remote control), it will pause & darken whatever is playing and elegantly slide over this screen. I apologize for the quality of the pictures, CRTs do not photograph very well.

From here you can see your Gamerscore (which is calculated by achievements you make in SP and MP games). You can also initiate private voice chats with online friends, send game invites, change your personal settings (for example, "appear offline"), select music (from a Windows XP computer, an attached audio device [eg, iPod], or the Xbox harddrive), switch profiles, or go to the Xbox Dashboard.

If you select "Select Music", the tab slides open wider and will show the available audio devices to get music from.

"Hard Drive" are songs you've ripped to the Xbox. It also has detected I've plugged in my iPod, so it appears there, too.

Next I selected my iPod, then chose to sort by "Artists". It's all here...except for any songs you would purchase on iTunes Music Store, which are greyed out because Apple refused to license the copy protection to Microsoft.

To get the iPod to be detected, all I had to do was plug it into the USB2.0 ports on the front. I've confirmed that the iPod actually charges while it's connected, too.

This is the new Xbox Dashboard homepage (if you have Xbox Live).

Using the right and left triggers you can slide through the different "blades" of the interface -- very smooth. The "Media" tab is fun, you can play DVDs there, stream/play music, movies, or pictures from a device (Windows XP PC on the network, digital camera, ipod, etc).

I selected the "Media" blade and then Music.

It lists the available audio sources.

The music player interface. It's got awesome visualizations in the window there, created by a guy (Jeff Minter) who's been making them for over a decade (his most recent work is "MilkDrop" in Winamp 5 -- his ancient stuff is used in iTunes). His "lightsynth" webpage: http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/lightsynths.php

You can also full-screen the visualizations -- it's running in 1080i here (720p and 480p and 480i also available). It uses all 3 3.2GHz cores to do some pretty trippy stuff. Way better than any visualizers I've seen on my PC.

I also really appreciate the marketplace's free stuff. I downloaded the demo to Kameo and HD trailers (720p) for most of the other games too. I don't think it could be made any simpler.

I have a horrible stretch of a couple months coming up with no new toys. I don't know what I'm going to do. I need to get a new one each month.

Maybe a new digital camera...perhaps a digital SLR.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is a technical triumph that has been lauded by the hard-to-please, with John C Dvorak saying, "I have not seen a hardware/software system this well thought out for a decade or more." Whereas the original was an underpowered PC, its successor boasts three PowerPC cores running at 3.2GHz, the competition is still in the labs, and it has a ton of games lined up.

But the launch is turning into a Thanksgiving Turkey for Microsoft, with widespread reports of instability, bugs and other glitches marring the $400 console.

The most common of these include failing to load a game, crashing while playing a game and freezes, according to regulars at the Xbox Scene and Team Xbox.

And what does a crashed Xbox 360 look like?

                              A bit like this, here.

Note the interesting multilingual error message, the proportionately spaced fonts and the cool Matrix effect, indicating that this is very much a next-generation BSOD.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters that glitches affected only a "very, very small fraction" of the units shipped, and that "the number of calls was not unexpected". ®
