What if I wanted to live there permanantly? Can it be done?

For some reason, I have this need to live by rocky coasts with tropical waters.
Even though I have never done so..

Greece is my other favoured option.
It's very safe and hospitable. friendly people. Just don't mention the Serbs. j/k. Although we were warned to stay away from certain areas because there could be land mines laying around.

And they speak Croatian. But if you don't speak that you can do like me and get by with English, German and crappy Czech.

Of course, I've only been there twice, two weeks in total so I'm hardly an expert.

      • I think we'll be needing some additional clues if we're to figure out duke o' york's and molly's pictures.

Otherwise you run a high risk of them being declared in violation of the laws of thermodynamics.

            Clues for my pictures-

this place was at war with the Dutch until the 20th Century.

The tower is named after a famous military leader, with a blemished face, if not reputation.

The island sounds like a trilling supermarket chain.

And you don't have to be daft to visit....

            • I do, Molly.

Know any famous hills thereabouts? Pehaps made famous in poetry, or some other art?

I know Grey Hill/Gray Hill in Monmouthshire, Cadbury Castle...

...er, it isn't Cadbury Castle, is it ?

I've been up it, but if it is, I've never seen it from that dramatic viewpoint, more's the pity.

                • No, it's the Wrekin, Shropshire's foremost landmark. A very pleasant stroll, not too taxing, even after a pub lunch, and some splendid views right across the county and beyond.

Darn that A. E. Housman- for a breath I tarried, and was instead thinking too long on Bronze Age hillforts.

I haven't visited Shropshire much, but my other half used to go gliding there annually.

Anyways, have you a clue as to where my piccies are from ?

They have strong links to poetry too, but older than Housman's...

                    • Well I'm glad that's settled.

As for molly bloom's IMPOSSIBLE to guess pictures..

I've been around every goddamn former or present Dutch possession or place of influence in the Caribbean and most of the rest of the known world, as well as the Shetlands, Orkneys, Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, etc. I've checked Scottish brochs, Martello towers from all over the freaking planet, and still no dice. Not even the beginning of the hope of half a used out dice.

I've come across a lot of nice towers though...

                      Maybe it's on Titan.

                        • There was a famous shipwreck in these parts in 1707, involving a man with a name like a rainy spade.

These isles have a unique climate.

They are linked to an ancient kingdom which is now a duchy- a duke of the duchy was once King of the Germans.

There was a church presence here from 550 a.d. onwards.

If led blindfold into the garden you would be hard pressed to tell which region of the world you were in.

Plant life from all corners of the globe thrives in this maritime position, thirty miles out in the Atlantic Ocean. The top terrace with its sea views and open, sunny-aspect, is home to many plants from the dry regions of Australia and South Africa. Summer breezes and salty winter gales alike push through the foliage of Protea , Leucadendron , Aloe, Banksia , Callistemon , Dryandra and Cape heaths.

Moving lower down on to the more protected slopes into the middle terrace we move into an altogether different plant grouping. Date palms, Echium, Aeoniums, Strelitzia, the South African "Bird of Paradise" all jostle for position with Passiflora, Agave and Puya , pollinated by colourful humming birds from the mountain slopes of Chile.

Shadier parts of the garden at the base of the hillside reveal statuesque tree ferns from New Zealand, and alongside grow towering Eucalyptus and symmetrical Auraucaria excelsa, "The Norfolk Island Pine".
