  • Picture Puzzle Thread Part 12, or thereabouts...

I thought it might be time as most of the British Isles has been or is going to be shrouded in freezing fog, snowstorms and such like, to start another picture puzzle thread and remind ourselves of what's out there in the mists, around the world.

So I'll kick off with a summery picture of somewhere exotic, designed to warm up those of us dwelling in the lands of the cold seas.

    Where is this ?

You'd like us to think it's in Uttar Pradesh, but quite obviously from the vegetation and surroundings, it isn't. I think it's somewhere in Europe, possibly Britain, but after extensive googling of Victorian style mansions I must say I'm none the wiser.

    Brighton?

        Brighton?

Ah, Winston, you so fiendish clever.

Great Danes think alike. No not Uttar Pradesh, but yes, the Indo-Saracenic architecture does give a clue.

Not Brighton, but it is in England, despite what these stony faced pachyderms might lead you to believe :

The name of the house derives from Old French & Old English; the interior is Greek classical revival; the exterior Indo-Saracenic/Mughal with a distinct Persian influence.

            And its late Georgian...

This market town near the Fosse Way is nearby and there's a private arboretum of some note close to it.

A-ha! I've found it to be Sezincote House & Garden in Gloucestershire.

Ironically, after having searched for all kinds of supposedly clever hints, what finally gave me the hit was a search for "Indian house England".

Good one, molly. Um, especially with the additional leads to actually give us half a chance of guessing it.

Well, there ain't that many buildings in that style in the British Isles- more's the pity, because I like that kind of affectionate, unlaboured eclecticism.

It sure beats PoMo 'ironic' architecture any day.

                Your turn, Win.

Yes, it does look rather nice. A place to go see if one's in the area, definitely.

Ok, this time we go to a small country, which could be said to have a relatively high standard of living - and whose capital city has a namesake in California.

This picture however, is from a city that takes its name from a country in the Mediterranean, and the church is rather unique in a certain way, namely that it's not constructed from traditional materials, so to speak.

Name of the city and country please, and remember to stand upside down in a bucket of ice water, humming Rhapsody in Blue to yourself when posting your answer.

Not a bad guess there Gangerolf!

But alas, it's not quite right. This country borders two oceans, and it's not Canada. Which by the way borders 3, now that I think about it.

Here's another picture, can you see what it's made of?

No you go ahead Gangie. There aren't too many people participating this time. Did you also happen upon the story behind the construction of the church? Pretty amazing..

PS. You missed at least two typos AFAICT.
