How come? What does the ability to read and write have to do with the legitmacy of rape in society? the link is very indirect.
yes. As rape and sexual slavery are still alive and well in Colorado City , Arizona.

If you hadn't noticed, women's rights to the vote, to an education and to engage in all levels of society on an equal footing as men came about in the context of relatively stable secularist democracies. Many Islamic countries have not progressed that far. Suffragettes in the West were not subjected to socially-condoned rape on a regular basis. The two situations are vastly different.
      a) Turkey is an aberrant anomaly, artificially created by a man of substantial vision (Ataturk) and maintained until recently by the constant threat of a secular military takeover. It remains to be seen what will happen to Turkish society without the threat of military intervention. Hopefully 80+ years of secularism cannot be erased, but we shall see.

      b) True. Good point. But still, I find it remarkable that no Muslim country has thrown up a martyr like Emily Davison. You know, do something like strap a bomb to herself and blow up the local tribal elder that sanctioned her gang rape. They do say that 'hell hath no fury like a woman scorned'. Maybe not in Islam.

You are assuming that there will be a logical progression to women's rights in these countries. Why should that be? They've advanced greatly in many areas, but why not this one.? Is it not possible that women's rights are a peculiar quirk of Western civilization? Just playing Devil's Advocate here.

The marriages were part of a compensation agreement ordered by the village council and reached at gunpoint after the father of one of the girls shot dead a family rival.

The rival families have now called in their "debt", demanding the marriages to the village men are fulfilled.

But remember, Pakistan is our beloved ally in the war against terrorism.

        Of course, these women are being terrorized . . . . .

They really haven't progressed that far, dude. Especially Pakistan, where the central government has virtually no authority in many regions.

I just find it hard to compare the sufragette movement in the West (which presented virtually no real danger to the individuals involved) with the situation of women in Pakistan, where they can be raped for refusing to marry somebody.

OK, but if the central government of Pakistan doesn't even have any say in bandit country, what can we do?

              I don't know. There's no easy solution.

I'm only here to criticise, not create.

I think it's more sickening that peopple want to lambast our precious ally against terrorism than what was mentioned in the OP.

Daggers are overrated and sledgehammers need to be appreciated more.

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
