The Vatican/Catholic Church has almost been bending over backwards in recent decades to distance itself from the American religious right. Its not the reason for releasing such a statement, but it may have been a consideration.

That and the Catholic Church doesn't teach that the Bible should be taken literally, word-for-word--they're saying that they do not see a conflict between traditional, non-atheist evolutionary theory and the teachings found in Genesis.

That OTOH would mean that they also have not much influence over hardcore "ID is a sciencific alternative to evolution"-people?

Yeah, I just wondered what impact statements from the Vatican will have on the discussion about ID in the US.

Very little. All the right wing religious nuts in the US are protestant. If anything this will re-affirm their beliefs.

A couple of years ago one of our parishoners, a prominent physician in the community, hosted a session of the adult religious education class about "scientific creationism". No one showed up. You see we thought that it would only lead to arguing. Since a good Christian is not supposed to take communion when he has an unsettled dispute with another Christian we thought that our attendance at the lecture, which was held just before the main Sunday service would ruin the service.

I'm not surprised...I was aware that the general standpoint of the RC church was not in alignment with this wacky fundamentalists...

So... this (among other reasons) means that the RC church is mainstream, and certain protestant groups are becoming extremist?

I learnt about the benefits of birth control at a Catholic School. Go figure.
