Momentum builds for fence along U.S.-Mexican border
If you don't know, don't talk. Good advice in all instances.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Tell me.. have you ever been passed over for a job when you are a legal citizen so they could give it to an illegal immigrant? They can pay them less. Meanwhile, you are without a job and they are getting the paycheck and not even a citizen.
You make an assumption which I feel to be unwarranted. You assume that the United States economy has a fixed number of jobs. Therefore, if an illegal alien gets a job, a legal citizen loses a job. This is not the way an economy works. The more people in an economy, the larger the economy, and the larger the number of jobs in that economy. That being said, there are unpleasant side effects of immigration, legal or illegal. It tends to depress wages, for one. But the economy as a whole is better off.
I'll be honest. My understanding of economics is certainly less than others here. But I know assure you that it is bad economic policy to completely stop immigration (and there isn't that great a difference between legal and illegal immigration. Both tend to take jobs for lower wages than natives).

The problem isn't immigration, it's illegal immigration and all the crap that comes in through the same channels; drugs, crime, etc... Building a fence won't stop immigration, but it will hopefully control what does come across the border.
Demand is the problem. Fence or no fence, demand drives this. If illegals couldn't get jobs, then you'd have a lot less of 'em.
I think we need to do two things in concert:
1) Streamline the immigration process so it's not so hard to be a LEGAL immigrant - perhaps with some special assistance for our friends and neighbors... you know, Mexico? This includes increasing quotas, if applicable.
2) Crack down on people & corporations who hire illegals.

Perhaps there should be a shoot-to-kill order along the fence for those attempting to breach it.
A 500-yard spread of landmines on each side would help? When the guards see a family trying to cross, they can take bets as to who gets it first - the woman or the kids.
