  • We should probably start thinking about a new thread title. How about Rugby - A Game of Two Halves ?

Are there any other rugby cliches we haven't dug up yet? I remember Fitzy used to have a cliche he would utter after every game...something like "full credit to the (opposing team)".

    • Um ... we still haven't done Hands Off White!. They are, after all, the master sinners.

EDIT. Just out of interest, here's the short history of the Super 10 finals:

      1993 Transvaal d Auckland
      1994 Queensland d Natal
      1995 Queensland d Transvaal

The comp only ran three years. The 10 teams were made up of NSW and Queensland from Oz, the top four Kiwi teams from the previous year's NPC, the top three Bok teams from the previous year's Currie Cup, and the winner of the previous year's Pacific Series between Fiji, Tonga and Western Samoa.

      Prior to S10 came Super 6 ...

      • Ok, hands off white it will be.

I had no idea there were Super 10 and Super 6 competitions preceding the Super 12. How many years did the Super 6 go for? What were the results/teams?

Interesting that SA and Oz teams won the Super 10 competitions. Why the sudden Kiwi dominance with the inauguration of the Super 12?

        • Because S10 effectively involved Kiwi (and Bok) clubs from the NPC (and Currie Cup) comps, while Australia, lacking a national club comp, fielded, effectively, state teams via Queensland and New South Wales. With the advent of S12 came the franchises, which let the Kiwis field much stronger outfits.

I'll dig around for the S6 results. I recall seeing them once.

          • I wonder how strict the boundries were for the 2 Australian teams too. Perhaps they were able to take players from states that didn't have a team. It seems strange that a Queensland team would do better than a NSW team.

            • You're thinking in today's terms. In years past, Queensland whipped NSW.

              • Cheer up, Havak, England beat the Barbs. They win when it counts.

                  • In very heavy fog. Apparently no one could tell what was going on - commentators or players.

Same conditions for both sides, Crusaders were better as they are better.

                      Oh yes, SALE!

                      • Having watched him at Sale the last two seasons I think you're spot on as regards the reason he isn't part and parcel of the French setup.

Chabal is an extremely lazy player, he doesn't make much of an effort to get arround the park. He does so well as he is able to produce a massive impact in short periods, this can be in tackling, driving and running, but he won't be sprinting across the pitch to get to a breakdown or cover a gap.

It is hilarious to see him sometimes in the full-back position having not been arsed to keep up with play. That said on the occasion the ball was lofted past him at full-back, he took a quick throw-in to himself and whacked the ball far back up the pitch.

SeeBass is such a magnificent creature to watch in action and a real star player at Sale

I think he lacks wind to play the full game at international level, playing well for one half time at most. I don't know what didn't click for him under the blue jersey, but something didn't work. I think Lievremont (Biarritz captain) is our best number 8, though it's not sure whether he can last till the world cup. He's not the same style of play as Chabal, but he's solid and you can really trust him to hold your pack (I can't seem to find words to say what I mean here - trustworthy, solid lad with strong defensive and mauling skills).

                        • Sadly the far better side won on the day. It worries me hugely that Tigers are no longer a big game team - when the pressure is on they fall apart. Sure we are formidable at home but that doesn't win you anything in the final analysis.

But natural justice was done - Sale were the best side all season and now are champions. Congratulations to them.

                          • Finbar - get the flags out. Austin (aka VD) has called it a day after last weekend. Planning to change careers and become a banker apparently.

That is just far too easy an opening for a writer of your calibre I suspect?

                              • Cripes. Saw the report, thought it was just a typo. You mean it wasn't?

Quite looking forward to Wallabies -v- England. Bound to be a case of whomever is less incompetent on the day ...
