    I have a MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP

    Does that help?

That chip can handle between 16 and 128 meg of memory, if you have enough main memory you can allocate up to 128 to the video. Of course you will loose that as main memory though.....

Yes, IGP stands for Integrated Graphics Processor. This means your graphics card borrows memory from your system RAM. Depending on your system RAM, you can borrow up 128 MB.

Don't ask me how to configure it though

          - What is main memory used for, besides video?
          - Is this generally a good idea?
          - Does anyone know how to configure it to use system memory?

            - Everything else

            - It's a leverage thing, take what you can take, see what you need and when you need it. If you're playing a game, you can slide a bit more memory to the IGP, but if you're (un)packing a large zip-file, slide more to the system RAM

            - Don't you have a booklet with your laptop that should explain it?

Main memory is used for 'everything else', do you know how much you have?

Try looking in Control Panel/Display Properties/Settings for the configure option.

Fair enough. But it should not affect the speed of programs?

I took the computer with me to Austria, and I'm a light packer

Wait, there's some setting in the control panel for the card that says "frame buffer." Is that it?

Hm, I don't think so. It should be something with memory.

Otherwise, consult the website of your laptop manufacturer.
