Update: My hypothetical friend is now 99.9% sure the problem is the Windows XP x64 device drivers.

His 32-bit laptop can re-establish a connection after syncing, but the 64-bit desktop cannot.

Hypothetically, if someone did not understand references made in a certain thread, they might need to brush up on amusing hypothetical threads of the past. These hypothetical threads weren't so long ago, so one should remember them. I can't think of any hypothetical reason why Sava would have a bad short-term memory.

Oh my God, you did buy an iPod. I'm very disappointed in you, Asher.

But then again, you still managed to turn this into an opportunity to bash Apple.

Hypothetically, your friend might say something unkind about MS.

No, because MS doesn't write the drivers.

Would not those drivers have been provided, hypothetically, by Apple?

My friend is potentially a genius.

He mounted the nameless device (I don't know why you guys edited my comments when you replied to say 'iPod'!) on the laptop and then accessed the drive, finding a file that handles Windows preferences. He then opened it up with his favourite hex editor and changed values by hand, and it appears to be working.

Because if it were any other non-Apple device, you would have solved your problem (which now really seems to have just been a minor annoyance either anyway) LOOONG before feeling it necessary to send an email off to its manufacturer or whatever AND starting a thread about your ordeal.

Besides the fact that you're the one who said iPod in your own posting, DanSher...

My friend doesn't consider it a minor annoyance to have to use a hex editor to load photos on a harddrive-based audio device.

My friend also says you smell of llamas and have elongated foreskin.

I meant that for somone as skilled as you in the computer field, this really wasn't that much of a trauma like it would have been for the majority of sheeple buying teh trendy iPod cause it's like teh trendy bling-bling.

Plus, I bathed today (with Dial soap and clean water) and had my foreskin cut when I was born.
