      4 wheel drive is nice, but it's not necessary. Civilized cities have proper snow removal, and if you know how to control your car in snow and ice and have proper snow tires, it's not that bad.

        That's why I said a smart driver knows the limitations of the SUV. That's why I never got stuck in the snow/ice. Hell, my 4-wheel drive hasn't worked since 2001, so I've been driving without it since then; my stepdad finally bought a replacement part for it this past summer. Maybe he'll get around to fixing it before this winter...

          You can increase the clearance on a regular car for less than the difference between it and an SUV.

              I live in the same place and to be fair, Calgary gets relatively little snow. There have probably only been TWO days in the last four years when I couldn't travel around pretty well in my Honda Civic ( it has proper snow tires, not just the all seasons)

              Now if you want to go into the mountains regularly, its a different story. If I were doing that, I would likely get a 4 wheel drive with a bit higher clearance
