I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

If this was so obvious, you would not have needed the chorus of negativity. The nomination would have failed on its own merits.

I think we need a rebalancing of expectations in the GOP coalition. The self-appointed kings of social conservatism don't run the whole show. They didn't play like team players here.
...
So Bush bounces from unqualified woman crony to qualified as all hell uber-conservative. Two possibilities:
1) He really wanted Miers in, but since the main criticism was qualification, he made damn sure to pick a qualified person the next time.
2) He knew damn well Miers wouldn't make it (although if she did it was not a terrible thing for him), but by picking her he at least put on a show of picking a woman for O'Connor's spot and paved the way for the person he really wanted: Alito.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

I find that scenario a little tortured, Ogie. Bush made the mistake of not fully vetting his candidate before he wheeled her out. But once he wheeled her out, she was out.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. You're just figuring that out?
Bush is the clearinghouse for the coalition. Social conservatives had been playing on the team reasonably well until they pulled an act worthy of the democrats with Miers.Last edited by DanS; October 31, 2005, 11:23.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. This seems like the perfect place to ask this but what is it about Scalia that makes him a boogeyman to the left?I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara

Where Roberts made the Senators look like chumps, Meiers likely would have not had near the same performance."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

It's still a rationalization for doing something that should have been left for others.
The social conservatives were spoiling for a fight, and Roberts was sort of a letdown on that score, so hey, let's attack our own president. I think FDR made that clear decades ago.
The democratic mantra seems to be to maintain a status quo on the court at nearly all costs. The republican one seems to be to move the court to the right.
The issue with moderate republicans is: Is this to far to the right?
Politics make strange bedfellows...It would be a devastating blow to the President if a democratic-moderate republican coalition emerged from this nomination. It might just paralyze the senate for the rest of the term and the republicans would end up squandering control of both houses and the Presidency.
Let's hope Bush was smart enough to have made more than a few phone calls to moderate republican senators over the weekend."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

No, the moderate Republicans aren't stupid enough to go cowboy on this, unlike what the social conservatives did with Miers.Last edited by DanS; October 31, 2005, 11:56.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. DanS, If you are right then the nomination will be successful given enough time. If the democrats begin a filabuster then the moderates will be called to task on the nuclear option.
Immediately after nomination, Alito was at Frist's side for photo ops. Frist will take the nuclear option to push this one through if need be."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic.
