And I have a question for your guys. I'm looking into possible ways I can make this move cheaply, but so far am stumped.
U-haul gave me a quote of around 3,000 dollars for even their smallest van, which is astronomical. The car rental places I've checked don't allow one way trips (which seems dumb to me).
I don't have much stuff at all, just a bed and a couple of desks, all of which can come apart easily. Beyond that its just odds and ends like computers and clothes, etc... Anyone have any experience with long distance moves?
I moved from St. John's to Calgary and ther movers cost something like 7000 -- ( my employer was paying)
The only cheap way to get much stuff down there is to find a truck thats going anyway and negotiate a cheap price. More expensive but with more security is to call a moving company and find out how much. They usually charge by the pound due to costs when crossing on the ferry.
Frankly, there is no cheap way there and if you don't have someone else paying the move, my advice is to downsize

OH and JCC where are you moving FROM?? IIRC its Toronto and there are frequently private citizens making that trip-- Posting on a newfoundland site like the "downhomer" might find you a ride pretty quickly. It sounds like a small truck would meet your needs.

Thanks for all the info Flubber, and for being the only person to give a positive response.
It has positives and negatives. I know people from all walks of life that love it there while a similar variety hate it. You would find a similar variety of opinion on living in New York City.
If you want urban and fast-paced, cutting edge and multi-cultural, its not the place to be. If you like a slower pace, nature, the ocean, spectacular scenery, its a good place to be.
Its funny when we talk about the weather in Newfoundland with the Houston folks-- They say its no big deal not to go out much in the winter since in Houston its so hot and humid that no one wants to go out in the summer--

Well actually folks not moving home but going for a visit are even better since it can mean more room for your stuff.
JCC on the downhomer site there is already a thread from someone that wants to move a "1 bedroom apartment" to Newfoundland. If you can combine with them, it could be worthwhile. Even a rental truck gets a lot more economical if you share it

But idf you share with someone you should take steps to make sure the other party will pay their share. ie both parties provide their credit card and be billed half the cost.

Is now a good time for the argument that the ferry system should be treated as an extension of the Trans Canada highway and therefore be free for use by anyone.
Given the geography and the length of the trip , its not like people will be joyriding on the thing

Just so you and JCC know . . . that "pretty much the whole city" shot probably shows 1-2% of the city itself ( not including nearby towns). It does show the whole of the downtown which is quite small.
Also aerial shots don't give the full effect of the topography. The reason the south side of the Harbour is undeveloped is that it rises at angles that near the vertical .
I looked at the shot again and laughed. It barely gets you to the first hill out of the downtown . from where that shot ends, you could walk for an hour in any direction ( as long as its inland) and not leave the city

I'd love to visit St. John's... but so far I haven't made it further east within the country than Nova Scotia. As far as I am concerned people from NL are the friendliest in the whole country.
This moving thing looks incredibly expensive. Can you ship by sea?? Or, how about dumping anything you can't stuff in the back of your car and buying new junk when you get there?
Didn't C. Annie Prolx's award winning novel Shipping News take place in Newfoundland? Great book...no plot, but great writing...boring movie.
