I'm moving to St. John's, Newfoundland

For what its worth, I'll be moving to St. John's, Newfoundland within the next couple of months. I'll be living right downtown which is cool.

I've been there a number of times visiting my girlfriend's family, so I'm well aware of what its like. However, I'm wondering how this underexamined, underappreciated corner of the world is perceived abroad.

So, what do you by's think of when you think of the "Rock"?

Nope, and the only ones who do live in St. John's. Much of the island lives in very small towns and outport communities.

Its actually a fairly cosmopolitan city in a number of ways, believe it or not.

Please. I don't mind snow, its the -45C w/ 50k/hr winds that kill me. I'll be happy to get out of Ottawa.

But yeah, winter is loooong. Thats the difference.
