        I am sure some where.

The unrealistic expectations of war are prevalent on both sides, it just works in the oppistions favor this time becasue it furthers unrealted political ends.

It bit Clinton in the ass in the Balkans/Somolia.

That is true. The death toll is much smaller then we would have gotten in Vietnam, Korea, or WW2. I guess that shows how much better frontline medicine has gotten.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

How many Americans died relieving the Japanese pressure on Australia? Were those deaths warrented?

                    yes, really

I remember someone said some years ago, I dont remember who/when/where (maybe it was even during the kosovo air campaignm and not iraq), that the troops are not heroic, because they are 100% safe, in a stealth airplane or submarine and just push buttons that shoot missiles/bombs.

And lots of patriotic people went ape**** because of that.

I do remember watching on cnn, an old serb man, very angry, who looked like a villager, cursing at the sky, who said something like "at least if they were fighting on land I could fight against them, but all from the air"

And Michael Moore in that movie he made, (which may be propaganda), showed some young soldiers for whom war action looked pretty much like a video game.

This reminds of a documentary I watched last month about leonidas and the spartans, who despised persians because greeks considered killing by shooting arrows as cheating, and after resisting so much they were finally killed by a rain of arrows.

                    Sorry for the long rant.

The Greek, Spartan in fact, who was told that the Persians would darken the sky with their arrows, replied that that was ok, he prefered to fight in the shade, then went on to Thermopolae. (sp)

The goal of war is not to fight fair. The goal is to kick the enemy's ass while suffer as little damage as possible in return.

One of the most heroic battles in history. The Spartans were outnumbered, by some accounts on the high end, 1,000,000 to about 300. Others have it at 250,000 Persians against 300 Spartans and 1,500 allies. The odds seem pretty ridiculous either way.

The Spartans held until a local Greek traitor showed the Persians a path thru the mountains around the Spartan line. Are Persians Wolverines?

While the 300 Spartans were eventually defeated due to the traitor, most accounts have them kiling 100,000 - 250,000 enemy soldiers including the infamous "immortals"

Anyways the 300 Spartans held long enough to secure a Greek victory in the battle, the future development of Greek culture and most importantly, the end of the Persian military threat.

Now tell me, what better team mascot is there than t Spartans?
