  • Whaleboy answered BK for me quite well, and since I'm not at home I don't have time for a long missive myself.

However, I will point out that this is going to be pointless. BK has--repeatedly--engaged in presenting false impressions of what Darwin said (his accusation of me engaging in a ad hominem against him is hilarious, considering I had to defend Darwin against BK's own false smears on his beliefs), shown he doesn't understand some basic scientific concepts (see his incredibly daft entropy comment in this thread alone), and has always slunk away from these threads when his silly assertions are swatted away, only to pop up again in future ones making the same, already-refuted arguments.

A prime example is his asking for the predictions that evolutionary theory makes. I gave him several in a previous thread, and we had a long exchange (which he slunk away from) in which he tried to weasel out of those predictions, full of more silly assertions like the entropy one.

So, Whaleboy, it's pretty much a fruitless effort. Fallen on deaf ears (no pun intended).

Can any of you recommend a good book on evolution, one that does a good job explaining the theory in a way that's accessable to a layman?

I remember reading a book called Darwin'Finches, If I remember correctly, in college. It was pretty good for a lay explination.

        That is IIRC the title.

While you're at it, could you all recommend a good biology text as well? I feel woefully uninformed in the whole life sciences area.

            • I'll get on readin that right away

But on the subject of the thread I think we should just add a Evolution thread since it seems to me that every site on the internet has at least one off-topic evolution thread ( that is any site with americains on it ), and its' pointles to just keep talking about the same thing every few weeks and presenting the same arguments.
I have seen quite a few of these debates on-line and even on-site ( look in the archives ).

And I BELIVE in science. Why you might ask, well that is because I am do not have enoug time to go throught the billions of pages of reaschearch material acumulated in the last two century's ( and offcourse before ). I think the most healthy attitude is that "I know nothing".This is different from being ignorant in the fact that you know thath you know nothing. I belive in science because scince knows it can be wrong religion does not. We are all free and can belive what we wish but wath we teach our children in public schools MUST be provable and in this case it is. Darwinian evolution is meant to explain the origin of species not the origins of life. So as that
part goes it is prety clear that evolution is true ( but please informe me if any divinity just happens to create a man from clay and does it again just to prove the experiment can be recreated and oh leaving some instructions for others to reproduce the results might be nice too). Simply evolution is fact (no,a good scientist would say it seems to be true considering the information avaiable ). Tere are countless examples but the simplest is with bacteria: antibyotic A kills bacteria all bacteria die except bacteria X wich is a mutant and resistent to antibyotic A. It multiplies and all bacteria from then on are resistent to A and have gene Y that allows X to be resistant. Imagine this hapening every few years eventualy you would get a bacteria that might be completley diferent then the original species it desceded from ( not only a strain as the multi-drug resistant TB).
I'm not buying BtS until Firaxis impliments the "contiguous cultural border negates colony tax" concept.

              • Boris, very true, but I didn't post that for his benefit. I think it's important that whenever religion or crackpot ideas makes inroads into areas where it shouldn't, like education, it is up to reasonable people to attack it and refute their supporters at every turn so while they may gain in terms of popularity, there will be one area where they will never succeed because it judges them solely on the merits of their ideas. ID, as an idea, and as we have examined, has little or not merit by which to be judged.

Why ask Gepap? He's woefully ininformed in the sciences in general.

I've been recommending it like a reviewer on shrooms, but Dawkins should be your first port of call, as well as "The Diversity of Life" by Wilson.

The line isn't really if a site has Americans or not and instead is if it has red staters or not.
