Greenspan was the best Fed Chairman ever, by far. Bernanke has some big shoes to fill.

Greenspan was a cheerleader for capitalism, Kid.

Bernanke is certainly qualified for the job, so attacking him because he's been working for the white house the past few months would be a bit unfair.

About the same, probably. He's still one of the "1nf|4710n 43v3r" crowd who thinks our magical printing press fairies will solve our financial problems, but at least realizes that the fairy dung from all that work could cause problems.

Defenitely not a Miers-level choice, which is good.

I'm just saying the guy was good at his job. That's not a comment on his politics.

We've been blessed to have 2 great fed chairmen in a row the last 25 years: Volcker (from the left) and Greenspan (from the right). It will be tough to fill those shoes, but I'm hopeful that Bernanke can at least be passable.

His father seems to have been a pretty honest businessman though he most certainly did use his government connections to get in on some fat deals. Bush Sr's father was supposedly a bastard and a cut-throat who'd do anything for a buck. He made big money trading with the Nazis before Pearle Harbor and even was found to still be conducting financial deals with the Nazis after the US had join the war.

I have to agree with you there. Volcker and Greenspan both seemed to be unusually good Fed Chairmen. I don't really know what to make of the claim that we printed to much money in recent decades but even if we did they still did a good job.

Here's a good string of free articles from the FT about Bernanke...

I wonder whether he has the gravitas for the job. The Fed Chairman is increasingly being perceived as one of the most important jobs in Washington, behind maybe only the President and Vice President. Greenspan really fit the role.

Did Greenspan reach retirement age? was that why he's going?
And i'll agree that big shoes need filling, apart from the recent expensive wars(not Greenspans fault ), his record had been very good.
I feel sorry for the guy inheriting the current mess though - its going to be hard to come out the end looking as good as his predesesor.

No mandatory retirement age here in the States. If Greenspan thought he was up for the challenge for another term, he probably would have been welcome to it.

And let me be the first to point out that Bernanke is a big baseball stats fan, so he can't be all bad.
