  • Identical, Bush-backing Editorials Appear Nationwide

Some of you may recall a few months back when papers across the US all ran identitical letters praising Bush which were supposedly written by GIs serving in Iraq. It turned out the letter was actually written by the White House Press Office and then were sent to military commanders in Iraq to pass out to soldiers so they could sign them. the signing was volintary but tax dollars were used to produce these partisan letters and the legality of the White House attempting to use official military channals to pump its political adgenda was highly questionable.

    Links to that story:

Now we have another case which looks suspeciously similiar. Newpapers across the country have begun running nearly identical editorials praising the Bush Administrations handling of the Katrina disaster and there decision to end minimium wage laws on Federal reconstruction efforts. Journalism schools teach that it is a major no-no for newspapers to attempt to pass off outside articles as in house editorials without declaring who wrote the piece and where it came from yet here we have virtually identical articles appearing across the country.

What do all of those articles have in common? All of them are unsigned editorials, which makes it look like they're original opinion pieces for each paper. The Colorado Springs Gazette even says it's "our view."

I'd like to know if once again the Bush Adminstration is using tax dollars to advance their partisan adgenda while attempting to hide that they are the source. If so it needs to stop. If it is just a partisan but nontax dollar funded organization then fine but newspapers really should inform readers who wrote the editorial and where it came from at least if they want to be considered a quality journalism source. I think it does say something about the state of journalism in the US that such obvious talking points are just reprinted in supposedly reputable papers without a word advising readers where they came from.

The propaganda machine continues. Do you know where that Iraqi Minister of Information went? He's writing those letters

The Colorodo Springs one doesn't look like the other Katrina-centered ones.

Well, according to everyone's favorite Wikipedia:

Although questioned by American occupation authorities, al-Sahaf was released, and there has been no suggestion of charging or detaining him for his role in the Saddam Hussein government. He is now living in the United Arab Emirates with his family.

Cyclotron, the really funny part about the Colorado Springs paper reprinting these talking points is that just last month they printed an article by Sean Paige, a noted Republican blogger and wingnut, complaining that moveon.org (a left of center advocasy group) was using pre-written letters of protest which moveon members would then sign and mail to Congressmen and local papers. He whined about how unfair and dishonest such a campaign was but here we have the same people taking part in a right wing effort! What's worse is instead of just letters people mail their Congressman this is propaganda which they're attempting to pass off as news and honest local editorials.

The letters signed by troops is a questionable tactic, but the nearly identical editorials is just fine.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Well, what I mean is that I don't see any relation between the Colorado paper and the other articles you quoted on the Katrina/minimum wage deal.

Found a few more papers which have published these Bush "editorials". All identical and all passed off as local editorials without a word of where they came from or who wrote them. God, journalists are getting lazy and the corporate media just seems to be reprinting political talking points without any comment or counter editorial.

I do believe much of this has been caused by the relaxing of the laws which have allowed the consolidation of media into the hands of ever fewer corporations. This has resulted in a reduction in competition so where as in the past competitors would have jumped all over a paper for such breaches in journalism ethics now there aren't that many competitors to persue these stories. Heck, what competitors there are also are major corporate holding companies who do the same thing.

That's just silly. A while ago, I would say that this Administration's propaganda tactics never ceased to amaze me - but they've done it so many times, it's just not surprising anymore. Try harder, Administration.

Press releases quoted ad verbatim has been the norm for the mainstream media for awhile now, but it's a problem when they claim they're 'editorials'.

That's where I differ. I feel that it is more of a problem for me at least when they are disguised as news.

It does indeed seem that I linked the wrong article. I'll see if I can find the correct link to where the Colorado Gazette cut and pasted these talking points.

Edit: They want you to be a subscriber to use the search funtion on their site. I'm to lazy to go through it all by hand. Sorry, but I think most people get the idea from the numerous other links.
