Thorn, since you live in the south, make sure you just tell them that the e-mailer gave you a death threat, if you tell the cops you are gay and that the e-mail was homophobic they might just ignore you (hell, they would probably want you dead if they treat gay people down there the way they treated blacks 50 years ago...

Yeah, report them to the police, I don't think you have a lot of other recourse.
Plus if the worst does happen, your boyfriend/parents will make a mint by suing the police for neglect
