Except that in my example they AREN'T preventing you from using it, they're presenting you from renting it.

If I where to try reversing the anaology I'd have to have movie pirates flooding the theaters with counterfit tickets and occupying all the seats so that tickets could no longer be sold.
Even a single ticket not sold is denying benefit to the movie theatre/movie makers. You don't need to deny the sale of all tickets by flooding the market to hit the revenue.

        1) Renting is using it

        2) This semantic subterfuge has no baring at all on the argument.

          • I just downloaded a few episodes of Rome. I've watched 1 and 2 so far. Its not bad. The sex and nudity is a bit excessive I think but of course its HBO.

As for the threadjack topic... I download and no I'm not going to make some fancy justification for why I do. I download because I don't want to pay for it. So I take it.

              • it's not theft... if it were then watching the show at a friends place would be theft too as you didn't pay for it and the result is the same: you get show from someone else

                • There is a difference: A simple point is that you don't have your own copy if you watch at a friends house, and there is no further distribution.

I believe most countries have a law that includes not making copyrighted video and audio available for public broadcast without prior permission; in addtion there is an acceptable use policy on private use of copyrighted material. If you are part of a P2P network, for example, you are making your copy publicly available and breaking copyright. If you are only making them available to your friends you are potentially breaking the acceptable use policy because a) your friends are able to pass it on to their friends in a knock-on fashion or b) you are deemed to be distributing to an excessive number of persons. Obviously b) is more easily assessed than a), but if lots of little sharing circles leads to one large sharing circle then the law will ultimately deem the small circles to be part of a larger circle.

If you are showing a single video to a few friendsyou are not publicly broadcasting and not breaking the copyright law/acceptable use policy. If you are running an effective video rental service or home made theatre then you are breaking the acceptable use policy of copyright.

I don't know the law on this issue, but that is my understanding of the context that it should be looked in.

It's been a whole week since Ive watched it but are you talking about the part with Pullo.

I really do like many of the characters. One character I absolutely hate is Servilia. Not the acting but the character. I know she has been through hell but damn I can't help but hate her. The gloating at the end made my skin crawl even though Attia deserved it. I suppose it's a testiment to the actress's ability but I hate the character and can't wait for her to end up like so many have on Rome.

Rome has seriously pulled me in thankfully HBO has shows like Deadwood to fill in

You're exactly correct. The argument is that opportunity cost is clearly an economic cost, and denying it is theft.

Then I have to ask my question again; If you crash at a friend's house, are you stealing from them because they are losing the opportunity to rent out the space you are occupying?

Or Traianvs's point, for that matter; If you go over to someone else's house to watch it because you do not have cable, are you stealing?

                        • I should think you people should have made a new thread for that discussion at about page 3...

Anyways, Niobe's son looked damn freaky in the second final scene of the series... Some sort of CGI-superimposing, either crappy job, or intented, as something Vorenus sees... Still, looked weird.

                          (Or is it wierd...)

Assuming it's without their permission and they were going to rent it out.

                            No, because of fair use.

Crap, I just finished episode 8. I can't seem to find the next four! arrgghh. I'm really hooked now.

If anyone could be so kind as to point me in the right direction via PM I'd be much obliged.
