Today's society seems to be addicted to violence in entertainment. Our movies and video games have violence in them. Reality tv is a big fad in North America. Would this type of reality entertainment be over the top?
I think that modern day reporting from warzones (CNN in Iraq f. ex.) comes pretty close to watching gladiators.

Pro-wrestling as a concept also approaches the concept of Gladiators.

But what if we brought current entertainment concepts to the Roman days? The Romans would be able to enjoy fantastic shows, like:

          - Frater Magnus
          - The Apprentice, with Emperor Nero
          - CSI: Roma
          - Roman Idol

People come to an arena and pay to watch spectacular violence. Given, no-one really gets hurt, but the basic concept is there.

I think it would be much better entertainment if, instead of "you're fired," they summarily executed the losers.

Zopperoni, spectacular violence? It's not violence.. it's peopel bouncing off of each other, big buff guys talking trash. It has the circus part in it, but not the violence part.

I think selected acts really hurt like hell.

Yea, with Emperor Nero, the term "you're fired" might be a bit too literal.

And I suppose they would have to have a fiddle-ing competition too...
