I also noticed there was no parking spaces for all those thousands of people nor were there restaurants or stores integrated into the development so people will have to travel if they want to do either of those activities. With a bit of planning residential, commercial, and retail space could all be integrated into the design as could underground parking.
    a) Our level of motorization is lower - less cars - and there WAS underground parking there.
    b) there are stores and restraunts in the neighborhood ( not in this very project), in nearby ones.

Regarding the protestors, that's just obnoxious, and it is counterproductive to their cause. The can protest without blocking people from going about their business.
It was counterproductive for them, and they haven't done anything major since. One of them also got in trouble with the administration for allegedly biting a cop, but I think the charges were cleared.

      • At some point, the housing costs will deter people from moving to California and will make the Midwest look like Paradise.

I look at my home town, Columbus, which has good white collar jobs in banking and insurance. A half hour commute will get you a really nice house (let's say 2,750 square feet or 275 square meters, 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms) and some land for $300,000. Still about $80 per square foot ($8 per square meter) as a base price for new. I guess the equivalent would go for about 4x in some parts of California, if you could find it. I challenge you to find this in any other place in the world besides the good old US of A. Maybe Canada a little bit. Maybe select parts of Australia.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The answer is people like me. Couples with professional degrees (I have a masters in engineering and my wife has an MD). I am currently renting but will probably buy in the next year or so. I am perfectly content to wait until prices stagnate or fall a bit for a while.

My estimate is that working couples with degrees like ours can easily have a household income > $200,000 per year. Currently my wife is not working, so we are just relying upon my income. Even so, we can save between $1000 and $2000 per month.

For me the choice is clear. Even though I had more disposable income in Iowa City and Atlanta, I was miserable in those places. It seemed I was allergic to every plant there and I gained weight and saw my health decline when I lived there. The food was also worse there. The raw ingredients were inferior (and there was less variety) so my home cooking was more complex (in order to make up for the shortcomings of the raw ingredients) and still turned out inferior end results. Restaurants are also better in the SF Bay area. Also, I'm not really a pauper here.....

                    • Oh yes. You will find bitter winter weather followed by a spring encased in mud. But don't worry, summer is a blissful hell of heat, humidity and allergens. Fall is not only the best time of year, it is the only endurable time of the year.
