Smallpox is no excuse.
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed. But they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Just watch Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata. Takes a bit longer, but emotional reaches (OK - tears out your heart and caresses it) a good 95% fo the adults if IMDB reviews are any indicator. The worst form of insubordination is being right - Keith D., marine veteran. My Smurf lore may be rusty, but I don't think there were ever any 'babies', as Papa smurf had to make new smurfs in the lab. The only kid Smurfs were the ones that had magically been made young in a Saturday morning episode.
