  • Mao's Computer-Retarded

    ...not just computer-illiterate...computer retarded.

So apparently I bought a CD I thought was a game, but was instead Daemon Tools, which puts a ghost CD drive on your computer. When I recognized what this was, and the fact that it apparently had a virus in it that kept eating up my HD space, I deleted it (since there was no uninstall file) and all the files with it. Now, however, I am left with a ghost DVD drive that annoys the hell outta me, how do I get rid of it? I click on it and it keeps prompting me to insert a disk into the drive, which I don't of course because the drive doesn't physically exist. The annoying thing also is that it apparently reset a bunch of things linking to my external HD to the ghost drive which has nothing, so a lot of my shortcuts now don't work. Any idea on how to get rid of this drive?
Who wants DVDs? Good prices! I swear!

With no extra information and not actually looking at your computer, my advice is to reformat.
I no longer use this account.

Have you tried removing it from the Device Manager? The drive should be called something like Generic DVD-Rom
This space is empty... or is it?

Although...I think there's some sort of virus that's eating up memory randomly in my computer. I'm running AVG Free Virus scan now, but it hasn't yet picked anything up. Worse comes and worst and I have to reformat, is there a way to do it without the windows XP CD since...well...I am a continent away and all...

Reformat is easy. Installing Windows XP again is tough.

You should also try hijackthis, which is a small app that checks everything that's running on the computer and creates a logfile. The content of the logfile should be pasted into the text-field on this site:
www.hijackthis.de (the site is in english)
After that you can see what everything is and if there's something running that can't be trusted... it has helped me a few times...
I don't remember where to find the file, but try to do a search for it

I actually have HijackThis already and have run it several times. However, I'm unsure as to where the log file is. Where do you think it's default would be placed in, it doesn't seem to be the same folder as the program itself.

Have you tried a system restore to an earlier date?
