That's good news. 80,000 is a lot, but far less than the estimate of 400,000 dead by the Pakistani government.

        • For those who want to support the relief effort in Pakistan, Labour Party Pakistan has launched a relief campaign. This is similar to the one by NSSP in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the tsunami, i.e not a single cent will be diverted for other purposes than actual relief efforts.

However if you live in a country that frown upon donating money to "suspicious" organisations struggling against a military dictatorship you could send the money via the swedish organization "Solidarity Without Borders". Contact sug@socialistiskapartiet.se for further information.

Of course donating to the Red Cross/Red Cresent works almost as well. http://donate.ifrc.org/ or http://www.prcs.org.pk/financial_donor.asp

Now we are both leaving the topic, but sug@socialistiskapartiet.se is exactly the kind of suspicious organisation anyone would want to avoid. The name suggests an extreme leftist political party that is not even among the top 10 candidates for the parliament. I've never heard of it before your post above. And why would an obscure socialistic party be something you want to support when helping earthquake victims? It makes no sense at all. Go away!

What's wrong with the red cross anyway?

Not to (further) threadjack this, but there is nothing suspicious about a small leftist group wanting to help people in Pakistan through their brother party in that country. Solidarity is not dependent on the size of the organization doing it. Furthermore I´m surprised you´re so intensly dissmissive about this. As you said, you´ve never heard of SP and therefore you can´t have any knowledge of what they´re actually doing, right?

Are you scared of everything unknown, or is it just evil lefties that scare you?

And Theben answered the Red Cross question.
