I'm not saying I'm pro-creationism being taught in schools - but i'm also aware that it's because of my own personal moral stance, not because i'm 'right'. The only people who believe in 'one truth' are ... um ... the religious folks ...

Looking at the fellow students of mine in my general chemistry course tells me otherwise. How hard is it for someone to grasp that a unimolecular reaction uses ONE reactant, or that you can simply do basic math on a calculator instead of just begging the teacher to give the answer?Originally posted by Pekka

I've just found that, for better or worse, most people just arn't willing to do the work. It's a matter of laziness, but that in itself is stupidity, not ignorance, because people should know better. A good part of the problem is pretty much as Drake has said - it's the culture we have for school.
In the case of science, faith is used by people who don't understand the actual science behind it. This is how the layman tends to not see a difference between the outlandish claims of both science and religion. However, there is a difference - namely, just because you don't understand, does not mean that there are not other scientists that understand. It's the collectivity of science that is its major strength - not all scientists are strong in every single aspect, and the use of faith as a substitute can be dangerous. It is better to be a sceptic and completely follow the methods of science, when it comes to science, than put faith in the current theories - science is never meant to be an absolute truth. Faith, while easy to take hold of, in the end, is not helpful for science.I have faith that it's possible, but I couldn't remotely tell you how or why, and I doubt any of you could, either, without relying on your faith that someone else is right.
When it comes to the philosophical implications of science, however; that is a completely different story. Yet, at the same time, it's not relevant to science as a whole - just because you might seem disturbed by quantum mechanics doesn't mean that it isn't an accurate view of reality, for example."Compromises are not always good things. Not at all. This video, while extremely funny, is obviously skewed. The video depicts only Americans who know incredibly little about geography and who actually want the US to invade another country. It's easy to interview 500 people and then choose 20 of the dumbest to depict in your video. What's the probability that a random selection of 5 or 6 people who you ask to identify some country will all choose Australia? Pretty damn low.Originally posted by Chemical Ollie

I'm basing this off of comparisions of state test scores. Lord knows those float up each year and usually someone breaks it down the results down by red or blue. The blue tend towards the top and the red tend towards the middle or bottom. We've seen such threads here at poly.Originally posted by DanS
