C-Net has reviewed some of their deals before. Also, a quick yahoo search reveals from results from PCWorld and ZDnet... they appear to be legit and reputable.

resellerratings.com gives them a pretty decent rating (it's all customer reviews)

        their lifetime rating is 7.63

        to put that in perspective...

        Dell is rated at 4.50
        Gateway is rated at 2.22
Alienware is 7.57 (but obviously is more expensive)

as I said, I've never purchased from ibuypower.com before, Boris...

I'm just trying to help you. I buy a lot of PC stuff online. To be honest, they have good prices, and a lot of the mainstream review sites have good things to say about them. If I were you, I'd give them serious consideration.

        I hope that this helps.

I'll try to give you as much info as you can so you can make an informed decision.

Essentially I want to get something for my wife to surf the internet -- to get her away from my desktop and out of the den. With a wireless connection she can surf from the family room with our son (keeping him from wrecking my den)

Any thoughts on specs would be helpful too but note my criteria

            1. can surf the internet at a a reasonable to fast speed (we have a cable modem)
            2. portable
            3. cheap-- Defintely <1000 and perhaps substantially so-- Second-hand might be ok if there is a reputable dealer of those locally

She doesn't do gaming and the computer doesn't need all the bells and whistles.

My thinking is that a DVD player or CD writer , a big hard drive are irrelevant. Literally, if she can surf quickly and easily thats it -- Other programs/computing needs can be done on the desktop
Hmm. Your best bet is probably Laptop Depot. It's a nationwide chain that sells refurbished or otherwise used laptops at low prices. Supposedly a great deal, never used it myself.

This one looks good, but you'd need a wireless PCMCIA card: http://www.laptopdepot.ca/Scripts/pr...?idproduct=129

well, that's about all the info I could find...

tom's hardware/pricegrabber doesn't have them listed as a merchant (probably because they don't sell individual components, just custom built PC's)...

So, I'm looking to get a new machine. Mine's 3 years old, so it's that time. No, I will not build my own.
Wait until next year. Seriously, a new version of windows will be coming out so you can get that when you buy the new machine.

Best deal on hardware, yes. However, I time my purchases with new software releases so you make up the difference since all the new software comes bundled together with it.

I time my purchases based on the hardware technology roadmap.

My next upgrade will coincide when Intel releases its Pentium M-based next-gen multi-core desktop chips, and whatever AMD has to compete with that.

MSFT supposedly has put a bunch of new anti-piracy features which make this more difficult. I'm not sure on the details but that's the rumor going around.

                              It's a funny rumour.

Good thinking Boris -- whip him into working hard for you while his guilt lasts.
