Is it so unbelievable for some of you to see two masculine men romantically love one another that you burst into uncontrollable laughter?

part of it has to do with the redneck reaction to their gayness... their respective denials, and then their wives getting mad at them... sorry but I find it hilarious when rednecks get all pissed off when someone finds out they are gay... like being gay is something to get mad about

sorry but here are a few lines I found hilarious:
in the begining of the preview:
"we're gonna be working together, I reckon we better start drinking together"

then across the screen it says THERE ARE LIES WE HAVE TO TELL, and Heath Ledger says, "We was just fishin' buddies!"
and then this other redneck guy says, "you boys sure found a way to pass the time up there!"

MrFun, I don't expect you to understand what is funny about this, you don't have a good sense of humor. And being gay yourself, it's probably extra difficult to find the humor in this (because it is an issue you are sensitive about).
I'm sure some people will find this story to be moving and powerful and all that jazz. That's fine.
But IMO, the general story could have been keep intact and a few changes could have been made and I would not have found the movie to be so ridiculous.
To be quite frank, the movie cannot be taken seriously because it is so ridiculous.
I'm not sure what specific changes I would have made. For starters, I think I would have casted unknown actors into the leading roles. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are not believable as redneck homosexuals. They are both good actors in their own rights, but these roles are not for them.
