Can't get the pic, but I really laughed when I saw the title
Lokum in danish means toilet - more specific, one of those public without water - not much "delight" involved in that
Though, your second turkish delight is really delicious
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
Forgot to say : yes, but it won't be bad if it takes some time. There are still a lot of problems in both EU and Turkey that has to be solved.

Anyone wants to offer an explanation about what exactly were Austrians trying to do there? It looks like a huge political embarassment now.
Real time update.
25 agree on final draft for Turkey. Text sent to Ankara. Ankara says it is examining the text. The scheduled for 17:00 ceremony for Turkey's start of negotiations was canceled, although that was some hours ago.
"There are two important movements that are opposing, yet of a similar nature, that everybody pays attention to: the revivial of the Arab nation, and the gradual efforts of the jews to re-establish in a large state the ancient Israeli monarchy. It is the fait of the two movements to battle each other until one of them is triumphant. And in the last results of this war between the two nations lies the fait of a tiny splotch of sand nobody in their right minds gives a damn about."

Everything in the EU is an oriental bazaar. (Turkish bazaar one could say ) Austria is steadfast on its support for Croatia's bid and for talks to start now! Actually it is demanding that talks go on now. Bargaining with Turkey's membership will give it more leverage for your benefit. That is but one aspect of course, but it is an aspect. Another could be that it simply accepted to be the "front straw man" for what is actually a wide spread undercurrent. Political damage to France and other countries would be delituted this way.
They have officially linked their opposition to Turkey's full membership with the EU not letting you resume membership talks immideatly. What a friend eh?

There's a word for that type of politicking: Byzantine.

Austrian diplomacy is lately either extremely sophisticated or plain dumb. I'm not sure...

However, as a casual observer, I can't know what the average Turk thinks. Maybe they would want a religious state, if Turkish elites permitted? Ancyrean will probably roll his eyes , but it's a legitimate question. A system where elites want one thing and a majority of people another is not sustainable in the long run, even if it seems stable now.
As a result of all the foot-dragging on the part of the EU and all the "Aaarrrrrgh!!! OMG Turks are coming!!1!" ruckus raised in a number of European countries, the overwhelming support (around 80 %) for EU membership in the Turkish public opinion now dwindled to around 55 %. I find it remarkable that it's still above 50.
As for the religious state, there's not much support for that at all. The AK party now represents the desire of many to see a more religious tinge to the way things are going on, but that's in a different universe than to want Sharia or something like that.
