Yeah, but Drogue, it's not as if the internet belongs to the US, it belongs to those who use it. If we don't visit sites with pop-ups in Chinese, then that's because we only vist US- or Europe-based sites.

Spammers, viruses, bugs, kiddie-porn, the fact that it's policed by a private company who can decide things that are hugely valuable to corporations, and gives a bit of an incentive to not be as "in the interest of the public" as they should be. Plus the problems about the US and Europe stealing all the finite resources so developing countries can't begin to use the internet.

I'd say that's some pretty good reasons to want to be involved, to check what's being done.

It's not about ownership, it's about control. Some issues need to be addressed and policed by the world, not an individual country.

It's not policed by the private company. Where do you get that? They just assign names and numbers.

As far as internet usage is concerned, China represents the majority of users.

US edges them out with 135 million to their 100 million for the moment though that will change.

At issue is who would have ultimate authority over the Internet's master directories, which tell Web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic.

That role has historically gone to the United States, which created the Internet as a Pentagon project and funded much of its early development. The U.S. Commerce Department has delegated much of that responsibility to a U.S.-based private organization...
Is that just names and numbers? Authority over the master directories that tell browsers how to direct traffic - that couldn't be useful to any corporation trying to get more traffic at their site?

yes it is just names and numbers, if you type in an ip you directly bypass the dns server. typing in apolyton.net wouldn't send you to some other server though.

What do you propose as a scenario where they could do such a thing?

but resolving IP addresses is done by arp rather then the central database.
