What I like about The Guardian, even though there are many things I don't like about The Guardian, is its commitment to a strong web edition. Of the four UK broadsheets, it's the only one to have had full unregistered access to its content all along. I think it is because that paper is more of a foundation than a business, and dedicated to itself, rather than money. The web edition has a strong following in the US I gather, even among people that hate it, so fair play to them.
Having said that, I can't really begrudge anyone who charges for goods and services, even if I'm not inclined to subscribe myself. The London Times is still fairly open access atm, but I don't thing the site is as good as the Graun.

Yes, the New York Times is trying to follow the successful model of The Wall Street Journal, and only offer the online content on a subscriber basis.
Many have tried, and most have failed. Industry experts think that the New York Times will fail as well. So wait a while, because I think the New York Times will be back to an advertising revenue model sometime in the future.
The real question, as Slate noted yesterday, is whether their going to refund the $49.95 that fools paid for Premium once they dump the service."I have as much authority as the pope. I just don't have as many people who believe it." — George Carlin

Since my household subscribes for the paper edition if only on weekends, in theory I should get all the web content for free, but I have not yet bothered to do it...
I do like the fact Brooks seems to have jumped from the GOP-ass kissing boat for the moment and is more interested in good ol' sociological columns, which as a Chicago alumn he does well.If you don't like reality, change it! me

No idea, I've never used it to buy anything. It just gets you into subscription sites.
I'd imagine the card number doesn't work anymore."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Bugmenot has, in my experience, been a way to get around 'free-login required' sites. I've never seen it get into a pay site, but who knows, i've never really tried either.
It works by having people send in logins to sites that require them, logins those people themselves created, and then anyone else can use that same login.
They'd pretty much have to set up the credit card thing on purpose I think, unless this service has gotten more underhanded ...<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

To be fair I haven't heard of it either, because I really don't care."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
