  • New York Times sucks!

I'm not talking about the content of the newspaper, or their political leanings or possible biases.

    No...

    I'm talking about their website.

I haven't been to it in maybe a week or two. So I go there today to catch up on Krugman's column. I log in, go to the Op-Ed page. I see they have changed some things.

Before, you used to be able to read maybe the most 4 or 5 most recent OpEd columns from each columnist for free. Archived columns needed to be purchased invidually, or I think you needed to be a subscriber of the paper. I'm not sure how it worked.

But now, you can't even read the daily OpEd columnists for free.

You need to subscribe to some crap called "TimeSelect" which is $7.95 per month.

    Screw them.

    I'm not paying for that.

They have a free 14 day trial.

I wonder how it works. It looks as if it is by email address. I wonder if you can keep signing up for them if you have different email addresses.

Aside from being able to use hotmail or yahoo or whatever to exploit that, my ISP gives me a lot of extra email accounts. They also let me change the name of the addresses at will. Maybe I will set one up and change the name every 14 days and keep renewing my 14 day free trial.

    SCREW TEH NEW YORK TIMES!

ehehehe but all is not lost... a quick search of the DU has left me full of hope... there are still many sites that are posting Krugman's stuff.
To us, it is the BEAST.

It seems the pay-for-online-content at newpapers is becoming more common. I've noticed over the last year or so that several Canadian online papers now require an online subscription where they didn't before. My guess is that the newpapers feel they are losing too much regular subscription business to free online content, so they figured they should make money off that too.

As long as it was Krugman that doesn't get out into the ether it stikes me as a right fine policy.

All newspapers are in trouble. They are losing a lot of ad and classifieds revenue to internet companies (google, ebay, etc.). If they had to fund themselves solely on subscriptions, they would probably have to charge 10 times as much per newspaper.

Yes, the New York Times is trying to follow the successful model of The Wall Street Journal, and only offer the online content on a subscriber basis.

Many have tried, and most have failed. Industry experts think that the New York Times will fail as well. So wait a while, because I think the New York Times will be back to an advertising revenue model sometime in the future.

It's not just google and ebay but also free sites like Craig's list which are killing the newpapers. For papers classifieds are one of the biggest sources of profits but web sites like Craig's list do that for free and people love it.

It's actually the opposite of WSJ. News is free while opinions are not. WSJ has free opinions, but charges for news. WSJ is probably the much better model where on the internet, opinion is a dime a dozen, but solid reporting is harder to come by.

I don't think they could pay me to read Krugman.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Yeh, I saw that, but figured that the general level of discourse on Poly would require a sledgehammer to get above the din.
