So I've been trying to install some DVD-ROM games (GTA: SA and BF2), and they always keep freezing in the middle of the install. I"m not sure why this keeps happening. I'm trying to do it on my laptop, which is fairly new. I mean, I have a Centrino M 1.3GHz processor and 1 gig of ram. My CD drive can read DVDs...am I missing something special? I have DirectX 9 (or above, maybe) installed already. What am I missing here?

How is the quality of the disks? How fast is your DVD drive? Have you noticed this problem or something similar with other disks, like CDs?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. It's fine when I try to install games/whatever through CDs, and I can watch DVD movies on it fine. I'm not sure what speed it is...how can I check?
Also, I'm not entirely sure I have DirectX 9, I'm pretty sure I installed it a while ago, but I'm not entirely sure. I tried to get it off the Microsoft website but the validation file that I need to execute to allow me to dl the file don't friggin' run my computer, keeps saying it's not a win32. *curses Microsoft* wtf...Who wants DVDs? Good prices! I swear!

Sometimes programs in windows freeze and it says they are not responding, but after awhile they will start working again.
I don't think DirectX has anything to do with it. Plus, you may be able to install it separately off one of your game cds.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. Yeah...I remember that's how I got it before, but I jsut can't remember if I'd reformatted since then or not.
It's interesting, the install freezes, says it isn't responding, then will start up again, but it won't actually install. The little graphic of the file moving will keep going, but the meter will indicate that it's not installing anymore. *confused*Who wants DVDs? Good prices! I swear!

Could it be that they're dual layered discs, and the player is having a problem with the transition from the first to the second layers?"I read a book twice as fast as anybody else. If you have the HD space free, I'd suggest copying the contents of the DVD over to your HD, and installing from that (with your DVD in the drive). I've had to do this for particularly bad CDs, but not for any of my DVD-roms yet (knock on wood).-Darkstar

Hmmm...let's see:
I have enough space on my drive (I have an external with ~120+ gigs free)
It might be the dual-layered thing, but how do I get past that?
Ubercheap copies in China? Maybe, but if I can't even get legit games from the states to work, I doubt ones bought from China would. Although, they are might cheap here, especially at the big department stores.Who wants DVDs? Good prices! I swear!

Even if it is a problem, though, it should only be a slight pause, not much more than that, unless the disc or the player are poorly manufactured."I read a book twice as fast as anybody else.
