I sometimes get disappointed that we get such boring weather in the UK. Our storms are surpassed daily by Florida's. We're lucky if we get enough snow to throw snowballs at each other. But then, I see this hurricane..

Looking over the data, I see that the two lowest pressure July storms ever occurred this year, Dennis, which was then surpassed by Emily. Then both Katrina and Rita have come close to setting records as well. Lotta strong storms this year.
There's a low pressure area that shows potential for development 500 miles S of Burmuda. Looks like Stan is getting read to take his cue.

It occured to be today that the US, because of its large size, is unique in how it deals with storms.
For example, in most East Asian countries, the size of the entire country is smaller than the size of a typical storm, making evacuating impossible.
Consequentially there is better defense and response when storms do hit. For example, houses are built with reinforced concrete and of more than one story, large areas of riverbanks are purposely left undeveloped as flood zones, and people are more aware of what to do and what to stock up on in event of power or water outages.Visit First Cultural Industries
