I get angry when I read topics like this. So much crap advice is handed out.

Running should be taken slowly at first. I would recommend no more than 5-10 minutes per week day. As your body gets used to the change, perhaps after a month or so, extend to 20 minutes per day. 45 minutes for an unfit person is dangerous and stupid. I've been jogging since high school - even I would find 45 minutes a tedious, unnecessary strain.

Allow your body time to rest. I would recommend weekends free from running.

Exercise though is going to be a big waste of time unless you get your diet right. It is incredibly simple: a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, fruit and grains, and minimum fat and sugar. When you cut sugary products from your diet, your tastebuds adapt to simpler flavours. You start to become interested in fruit as snacks rather than naughty things.

Who cooks an elaborate meal for breakfast except maybe the english? Just have a bowl of high fibre cereal. 30 seconds preparation.

Swimming is probably very good for you, but I have always found it highly frustrating.

Firstly, it is a hassle going to the pool, paying for entry, getting changed, finding a free lane, getting dried, getting dressed.

It is monotonous. It takes concentration to maintain a fluid swim stroke, and maintain a good pace, so the mind (mine at least) is not free to think constructively, or just drift off in a day dream. I am trapped with little mental stimulation, in a tedious, boring chore.

Where I live it is also very aggravating. Usually you have to share a lane with two, three, sometimes even four other swimmers. So you also have to concentrate on watching out for them, overtaking slow swimmers, or worse, being overtaken yourself.

I must admit it is refreshing when you finish swimming, but what a price to pay.

A jog on the other hands is free, time efficient, mentally stimulating, and healthy providing you don't run excessive distances and at a nice easy pace.

I like jogging because you can do it almost any time it is light out

also, it burns a lot more calories then other activities like bike riding

IIRC, cross-country skiing burns the most calroies. Rowing and swimming (freestyle) also burns a lot.

            swimming does more then jogging

but it has the problem of not being very convient for most people (need to travel to a pool, have access to one, etc)

            same with cross country skiing

jogging is the most convient, most burning activity...

Any exercise is better than nothing. Say turn on some music and flail your arms and legs around or use a hula hoop for 20 to 30 minutes each day at home.

Unless you are drunk at the time. Then its funny.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Rowing is an excellent way if you can get access to a machine (don't get one of the cheap machines either, they strain your back an awful lot more than flywheel or water resistance models) and someone to show you how to do it properly. Much lower impact on joints and adds some resistance to your training so you'll be building up muscle at the same time.

I have just moved to Loughborough Uni, the training facilities there are scary even to someone like me who's been a decent athlete since I was 12 or so. Guess it makes sense if you got the English Cricket Academy on site, alumni include Paula Radcliffe and they have won the overall BUSA (NCAA equivalent) championship for the last 27 years running.

I have reasonable strong legs (not owning a car helps), but I have puny T-rex arms and a fairly round belly. Without resorting to a gym membership or getting a labouring job, what kind of exercizes should I be doing to rectify the situation. Pushups, situps and crunchups?

Pull ups on door frames if you're short enough might help. I personally hate them, but then it might be worth a try.
