  • Saxony in times or the Weimar Republic (1920's) had a strong social-democratic tradition. After 1990, however, it is traditional conservative, giving them in times even an absolute majority.

    • They seem to have been performing quite well with a CDU-lead government: they have lower unemployment and better education systems than the SPD-run east german states.

        • Why is CD strong in southeast of former East?

German carmaker BMW has opened a brand new car plant in the town of Leipzig, raising hopes for a revival of the economically depressed region in former communist East Germany.

Perhaps they do it to piss of Brandenburg?

Anyway, I think Saxony should have pre-congress boarders + the Cottsbus (Chociebuz; whatever in german) exclave, to keep all the Lusatians in one land.

I have one question: there's a blank spot in Saxony. Is it a lake, or some major city?

Cottbus? I think Ecthelion may have something to say about that one

              • Thats Dresden.

Germany's election on Sunday could face legal challenges amid allegations of unfairness: Voters in the eastern city of Dresden will head to the polls two weeks later due to the death of a parliamentary candidate.

The election in Dresden was postponed by Germany's federal election commissioner after Kerstin Lorenz, the candidate for the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) died of a stroke last week. A replacement has already been found in Franz Schönhuber, the former national leader of another right wing-extremist party, but there isn't enough time to reprint ballots before Sunday.

I remember hearing about this, how inconsiderate of him to die just before an election How long will it take before the votes are in for Dresden? Would it be capable of having a significant impact on the current balance?

                    • Shortly after the reunification CDU was ahead in most new Laender (except Brandenburg and East-Berlin IIRC).

With Prof. Biedenkopf the CDU had a charismatic figure in Saxony. He did a good job and therefore he was able to keep his good results (above 50%). Recently the NPD is quite strong there.

                      • No significant impact.

                        The best explanation is here:

Nach der gestrigen Hauptwahl der Bundestagswahl 2005 kann es nun in zwei Wochen bei der Nachwahl im Wahlkreis Dresden I zu der von Wahlrecht.de angekündigten und rechtlich problematischen Möglichkeit der taktischen Stimmabgabe kommen.

Der Abstand zwischen Union und SPD könnte sich somit auf 224:223 verringern, sich aber auch auf 226:222 erhöhen.

The CDU could actually lose an Ueberhangmandat. but thats all.
