Well, I'm glad to see that he cares about something, cos it's certainly NOT the well being of the country as a whole.

    Way to go, Shrub!

          Not to mention political suicide.
Note that the adjustment in the gas tax gets offset by a reduction in the income tax. How is that regressive or suicidal?

I'm with DanS. Why is this necessarially a federal issue? Also if this is a serious letter rather than something to post on Poly it'd need some editing in order to appeal to the target audience more.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

How will the income tax reduction be spread?

AFAIK, in america, you basically can't get around in most places without a car. Thus, I would assume that gas expenditure is a higher percentage of total expenditure for the lower income brackets.

Nice try, but you better drop the line which implies that a French politician could think or say something which is remotely right.

However, instead you could add more insults against those evil French to win the president's confidence

Do you think the average American voter is going to consider that? I think it's far more likely that they'll just notice that they're paying high prices at the pump and blame Bush and the Republicans for it.

I agree with much of your proposed letter, but I think you're wrong in suggesting that Bush has a "second-chance" to hike the gas tax. Such a chance may have existed after 9/11 (and even that is debatable), but I see no reason why the situation now would allow Bush to raise the gas tax without incurring significant political damage.

nahhh, if he sent it in in its present form, he'd prolly be the target of an investigation for being a terrorist, or at the very least, a potential threat to national security.

Such is the state of paranoia of the present administration....
