  • Spend less - for example by eliminating corporate welfare, farm subsidies, lumber subsidies (the companies can build their own roads), eliminating all new federal flood insurance, eliminating food stamps while turning them into a WIC style program, increasing the number of free clinics in underpriveledged areas (much cheaper than the ER room costs and Medicaid costs), increasing the number of proven anti-crime programs with juveniles - saving on the cost of incarceration and the overall cost to society, etc. Do that, while changing our military to primarily a defensive force, would cut the overall budget by a huge amount.

So what? It also brought you a plethora of jazz bands. Too bad I hate jazz.

It also got you, um, an enormous amount of public nudity during major holidays! I'm thinking specifically of New Orleans, not all of Louisiana.

Meh, I only agree with about half of that. And the other stuff isn't a federal question in any event. I'm all into locking the criminals up no matter the cost (our prisons aren't full enough), but that's not a federal question.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • Which half? And a quick question, reference locking up even more criminals. We have the highest incarceration rate of any industrialized country in the world. Would you be for programs that attack the root causes, in a verifiable way, thus reducing the number of prisoners, and expense, to the taxpayers. If not, what kind of programs, if any, are you willing to support. Note you are talking to the guy who supports 20 year no parole minimum sentence for those who commit crimes with a firearm, and de facto life imprisonment for those who commit large scale fraud - one of the few cases where their is a genuine deterrent effect because you are dealing with more intelligent criminals. I was going to ask before we do a thread jack, do we want to start a new thread? Of course this one is whimpering to a halt, so the harm of a thread jack is minor.

edited to add in I'm going to bed so I can answer any posts tonight or in the morning

Yes, it's unfortunate that this is required. I don't think it's so easy to know the causes, however, so spending money on increased incarceration is required in the meantime.

It's not like modern sociology has been studying the phenomenon for decades, and it's not like there have been plenty of testing programmes that have actually been proven to work

The defensive military part doesn't make any sense to me. The food stamps > WIC I don't have an opinion on. I don't mind federal flood insurance, so long as the full cost is passed on to the insuree. Free clinics just concentrate poverty in an area; quite a bit different approach than I think necessary.

There is no need to be modest: you not only beat the industrial countries

What has been proven to work in the US is increased incarceration and more cops on the beat. This costs lots of money. But I am happy to pay, knowing that this will increase property values in the end. To this I would add a more healthy income mix in a community and tearing down all the projects. This doesn't cost lots of money, but it's something of a beggar thy neighbor approach. It has also been posited that the increased abortion rate has an unintended consequence of lower crime.

It doesn't take sociologists to tell us that these things work. And all of these things can be done on the local level by voter choice.

ioh sorry, I was under the impression that you didn't know the causes for crime, and efficient preventive solutions:

These are all treatments for the symptoms rather than the causes. Very blunt instruments.
