When was the last time you heard a politician take responsibility for anything?

Bush said Tuesday that "I take responsibility" for failures in dealing with Hurricane Katrina

"I thought you must be dead ..." he said simply. "So did I for a while," said Ford, "and then I decided I was a lemon for a couple of weeks. A kept myself amused all that time jumping in and out of a gin and tonic."

He says he takes responsibility. So what does this mean in reality? What's he going to do?

Shouldn't this entail some sort of penalty? Otherwise, it's pretty ****ing meaningless.

Imagine if I ran over someone after DUI, and would get off by saying "I take responsibility", for example.

Now, he should do another "I take repsonsibility" for his mishandling of Iraq.

Actually, he said he took responsibility for failures of the federal response to the emergency, and rightly so. He does not accept blame for state and local failures to the emergency (of which there were many), and rightly so.

No need to lecture me about the danger of DUI drivers, GT. My cousin died because one of them.

The point is that he admitted he was wrong. That is a rare thing among polititians today. They make mistakes all the time, but getting one to admit it would be damn near impossible.

As for penalties, why? There will be repurcussions of the statement, i'm sure. I like it that when a man steps up and admits wrongdoing, you want to slap a punishment on him, but you don't say anything about all of the people who screw up and won't admit it

Not amongst those that don't have to face any consequences. Then, they knowt that people will give them credit, and have no problem admitting it. But it's still a good thing, better than nothing, yes.

Good for him. Once someone takes some blame, it makes it easier to focus on fixing the problem.
