Mercinaries have no place in a modern democracy since they are accountable only to thier shareholders, not the people.

This sounds much, much, much funnier if you imagine Dr. Zoidberg's voice saying it.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

Relying on mercenaries is never a sign of strength, especially in today's world.

What are you talking about? All the strongmen and warlords with power in sub-saharan Africa employ some of the best mercenaries!

yes and mind you it's not a reference to.. tredje riken either Just dry.

Of course using mercs is not sign of power. Only weak ones have to rely on mercs. I think that's pretty obvious?

Private companies are beholden to noone but their shareholders.
and to whomever hires them. If these folks have been hired to do private security, thats one thing . . . I just don't understand why there would not be enough regular police and military to provide the regular policing function

Hasn't policing gotten somewhat easy in the sense that anyone roaming around can be investigated.

The private security people that I know are definitely better trained than the police or the army. The ones that guard factories or stores at night get only a few hours training. The ones who are hired for high risk jobs like Iraq probably get more training, but I doubt more than a few weeks. Many of them are probably ex-military though.
