            If you paste a solid line of the color from one square to the other you can see a gradient which doesn't exist.

              Another strange thing, I've been trying to figure out how they achieved getting the letter B to appear darker than the underlying square. If you look at the square with A on it, it looks so dark that it's mystifying how anything darker could stand out so distinctively as the letter B undeniably does.

                  Another interesting experiment is to see how much of the original picture besides the two squares you have to cut out before the shades start looking identical.
