I reckon those who didn't leave, couldn't. Who else would want to pack into Superdome with thousands of others for days on end?

Which brings up the point that the government (Feds, state, city, etc) should have provided buses and couches for people.

That would have been good, I know that they are trying to do that now, take all the people out of the Super Dome by bus to Texas. After a certain point in time there is no more time to evucate, because if people had started to leave on Sunday in Buses they would have been caught in the storm and they would have had no protection at all.

One thing I think that should have been done years ago was to upgrate the dikes in New Orleans to handle a strom like this, but no one wanted to spend the money to fix it. Now look at what has happened.

On somthing more realting to this thread, I gave my first donation to the Red Cross today for the hurrican victoms. How about the rest of you?

So the poor, the ill and disabled got left behind, eh. Not a great evacuation plan.

My donations go to the Red Cross for the tsunami victims. The U.S. has the money to take care of its own citizens.

I am pretty sure that this was the first time they had to evacute the entire city.

I don't believe our gov will chip in to this one. There will be, naturally, private donations.

I think the ideology behind it is that the US is rich country, and we have to choose where we give the small amount of money we can give (in bigger scheme of things), and we choose to give it to somewhere poor. Of course, the commie reps can't grasp the idea of natural disaster and that there are poor people in NO too who will get ****ed over with this thing the same as if it was somewhere else.
We rather give it to warlords in Africa, who can **** their people over even more. But it's cool, because it's Africa and we can sleep our nights better knowing we did our best.

The U.S. has the money to take care of these people. A place like Indonesia has far less resources to help victims of a natural disaster.

If that's true then it's more difficult to criticize New Orleans for having a flawed evacuation plan, except to look at the problems that did occur and learn lessons that can be applied in the future.

I'm really worried about being laid off. Is it okay if I don't donate? Even though I have money in mutal funds and all. I have very little available cash. If I'm unemployed I'm going to need that money.

Right???? In the short time they had they were able to evacuate 80% of the people in New Orleans.

They did not evacuate anybody!!!!! They simply told people to get out. Cuba never has anything like this happen, cuz they order everyone out and then set up the transportation to make it happen. And people get out of harm's way. I'm not saying people should be ordered out, but the least they could have done is set up busses, trucks, trains, and planes to get people out from low ground.

The plan was the ultimate expression of conservatism, everyone for themselves, get yourself out.

TIngkai, you're right when you say Indonesia etc and the tsunamis and stuff. Yes.

But in most cases, we shell the money into dark operations. No one checks anything. And people take word of other people. SO.. It's far more constructive to give that money now to New Orleans than into dark operations. Which does harm, not good.
