Any recommendations for sci-fi flicks that aren't overly cliché?

Do you know what "overly" means?

For goodness sake. Not overly cliché, as in "not too cliché". Now recommend something or just bugger off.

I've mentioned it before, but the Voices of a Distant Star OVA is interesting and still is reasonably fresh. Only 30 minutes.

Two TV series that are less sci-fi more space opera are Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

More of a cliche (kids learning to be astronauts) but still reasonably good TV series is Twin Spica.

Lots of very bad anime sci-fi. But you do get some areas that aren't covered by English language contemporary sci-fi, such as your more realistic near-term stuff in space.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Thanks but I don't think I'm going to risk a TV series.

Why not? Good sci-fi anime movies are pretty rare, or at least I have not been exposed to many.

Dude, you know how much time it took to watch all the episodes of the Sopranos, not to mention the agonizing over of the Season 6 part 1&2? It's exhausting to follow a series from beginning to end.

I cross-edited you. Suit yourself. If that's what you're looking for, definitely steer clear of Legend of the Galactic Heroes (110 eps). Twin Spica totals 20 eps. Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars totals about 40 eps. Voices of a Distant Star is still worth a look.

But in any event, it's not as if Japan has anything like Hollywood to kick out original movie format anime. Most of the anime movies are bad remakes of TV shows.

Seems like there's another GitS movie. Any good? Hopefully Kusanagi gets her original body back. Rrrrrrr.

You can also watch the series for that too.

I liked that one. The animation is a bit headache-inducing at first (the best way I can describe it is that the background dominates the foreground, i.e., if a character is wearing a polka-dot jacket then when said character moves the jacket acts as though it's a window into a polka-dotted background, as opposed to acting like an opaque polka-dotted jacket), but not like a Ralph Bakshi-esque puke-a-thon. I fully approve of the story.

Voices of a Distant Star was good, albeit short and with an unfulfilling conclusion. The Place Promised in Our Early Days is longer and has a better conclusion.
