Why won't they open up the southbound traffic to move north? Let the jam work itself out in the north where its safer.

Jin Cantori is in Biloxi Missippi. About 40 miles west of New Orleans. The Jim Cantori Factor is in play. He always misses the the eye of the hurricane by 20-50 miles

This thing is headed straight for the city.

but if I'm not violating the rules, I'm sorry, I'm not going to (nor do I think I can) change the way I look at the world
Yes you are... many times we have not allowed trolling or terrible jokes in serious threads dealing with massive potential death... and now you have been warned. If you feel a need to make fun of other peoples problems, then go find another site where it is welcome. Because it isn't welcome here.

I have friends there. My daughter dates a young man with family there.
And they have to have a way into New Orleans.
            Rescue workers, supplies, whatever.
It can't become totally outgoing traffic.

What's not addressed in this evacuation are the thousands living nearby along bayous (streams, channels).
These bayous direct any water inland, flooding out land in the vicinity.

What nipped Florida was minute compared to what's headed for New Orleans; but speaking of Florida, has anyone heard from Che?
I give him ****, but I wouldn't want him to die.
Much less end up in Montreal.

Che has posted in his "Oh sh*t Katrina's coming" thread (on the second page now), he had power out but now he's ok. (Although his cable is still out, and he was posting from a library)

As for this...New Orleans is especially vulnerable to hurricanes. The evacuation is a good call by the mayor. He has probably saved countless lives.

I remember reading an article a few years ago that mentioned how New Orleans would be consumed by the ocean within 100 years or so, given the melting of the icecaps and erosion and etc. etc.

Looks like the city might not last even that long.

Apart from the human tragedy, which could be incalcuable, the loss to history would be enormous.

Goodbye New Orleans. The city will be flooded so badly. I dont think it could be brought back. Some people on TV are agreeing with me. This is bad. We will all be affected by this monday morning.

Here the image that che posted. Updated every so often by NOAA. Everyone's gonna be soaked by this one.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Just FYI, to those who don't know the area, the city of New Orleans is just the city itself comprising half a million people. There are suburbs that house hundreds of thousands of people, like Metairie, that are behind the levees as well.

FOXNews said they are telling poor people to go to the Superdome.

Stupid question, but I assume the Superdome can withstand a direct hit without damage beyond the exterior corridors?

                                I would assume yes...

FOX said the only possible danger to the dome would be flooding, but it is built in an area safe from flooding...
