Cause Henry wanted a divorce. Losing England for want of a divorce... silly Pope.
A church needs to have some rules, which reminds me: all the thing chegitz boasted with are late addition, Anglican church has no rules and does what it's asked for.
But, actually, it was not only about the rules: first wife of Henry was Spanish, and pope prefered losing England to losing Spain.

Seriously, whats the deal with American Episcopalians and Canterbury, and the king. I mean the whole point of the Act of Supremacy was that it was wrong for a foreign institution to control the spiritual life of England, right? That the bad thing about the Pope denying Henry his annulment was that it was done for political reasons, out of deference to Charles the V, and not for religious reasons, so that Englands future was held hostage to considerations of Italian politics, right? And legal precedent was established for the ancient autonomy of the English church, under local kings, going back to mythical 2nd century monarchs.

So like, its 1783, and these dudes in Virginia, etc, have shaken off the king, said good bye to their departing loyalist cousins, and pledged loyalty to the Republic. And they decide to keep their church subordinate to a foreign clergyman, himself appointed by the very same foreign potentate theyd just waged war against. Kinda puts them right back, politically, where Henry was in 1529, huh? Now theologically, it would seem to make sense to go back to Rome, or something like that. Though I guess that wouldnt have made them popular with their Congregational neighbors, and would have been a problem for their married clergy, their low church members, etc. But still, it seems to be a huge contradiction.

hmmm Its not often you see Utah and Nevada lumped together like that ( I mean I don't imagine Vegas and Salt Lake City being that similar)

What distingushes these places other than the fact that they are geographically proximate to one another?

Aside from the magic underwear and ther refusal to drink alcohol, Mormons are fantastic people, IMHO!

actually a recent article I read named the most red and blue cities in america.

Provo, Utah was the most red. Texas isn't as conservative as most people think. Utah blows Texas away for conservatism.

                        P.S. on the Cathedrals....

The trippiest Cathedral that I've ever seen was the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. It's like a cathedral on acid, especially with Gaudi's design and the bright, festive colors on the spires. It looks like, from some angles, like a gingerbread house would after a rainstorm.

here's the article that lists Provo as the most conservative and Detroit as the most liberal. I believe the results were compiled from voting records. Which I admit are flawed. Because you just can't assume because someone votes republican they are conservative...

Yea I just discovered that Cathedral the other day, actually as a result of this thread looking into St. John the Divine. I'd love to go visit this thing, the pics look cool:

1.3% are Mormons huh? How much of that is children that were forced to be baptised into the religion at the age of 8 before they had any knowledge of the religion?

Mormon by choice or by force? Maybe the percentage would drop.
