I concede to the mighty Phil. His blurry, wet upper lip and huge watch are just overpowering.

          Beatles.
          Phil Collins

          Attempts to compare the two.

You'll have to prove to me they are talented. it's pop music. It's all it is. They couldn't even hope to match the complexity and talent of classical music.

I say we flung both the Beatles and Collins from the airlock.

In a sense, the Beatles reinvented classical music.

Classical music is about melody and harmony on the western scale. At least it was until the 20th century, where in an attempt to break new ground these essentials were ignored when the composers threw out the baby with the bath water. The Beatles returned to classical music's traditions with strength of melody and depth of harmony.

The songwiting and arrangements of The Beatles is actually far more sophisticated than most 'pop' bands, which is why it's not true to dismiss it as 'only pop'. The intro to 'I am the Walrus' has over a dozen chords, for example, which is not characteristic of popo intros.

Even their early, relatively simple poppy stuff has very complex guitar arrangements that require two guitars working together harmonically. Most pop songs can be played on a single guitar and a single voice without losing the feel of the song. Beatles stuff just doesn't sound right unless the harmonies of guitars and vocals are there.

To say that they are not talented is like saying that Michael Schumacher can't drive.

Anyway, no-one is trying to say that the Beatles are better than J.S Bach, just better than Phil Collins.

But it is hard to say who is greater from Phil, Paul and John.
This is not about individual Beatles, IMO. It's about the band as a collective.

It has been said that Ringo Starr was not only not the best drummer in the world, he was not even the best drummer in The Beatles. As far as drumming goes, Phil Collins takes the points, but The Beatles were not about drumming, they were about song-writing and arrangements. Phil Collins as a solo artist is not about drumming, but about song-writing and arrangements. This is the ground to be contested.

In a different world, Harrison could have written every song the Beatles ever performed, and they'd still be huge, and better than Phil Collins
