Before the 2004 EU enlargement the EU used the UN Road Traffic Conventions license plate codes; since then, it uses ISO 3166-1, with 2 exceptions: EL (not GR) is used for Greece, and UK (not GB) is used for the United Kingdom.

so i guess we should stick with the EU choice instead of the worthless ISO (who are these guys anyway? ) and use EL

Abbreviations were adopted in order to save effort and room in writing and typing. But in a numerical world when most informations are edited without typing, the need of abbreviations is considerably reduced, and its use should be limited to sentences where no ambiguity could result from it.

No. I am not from goddamn Illinois.
Neither are you in Europe, so the abbreviation nomenclature thereof needn't concern you.

In GB,UK (not sure about NI,UK), we can use the car region codes if we need two letters rather than county abbreviations.

hah, you think youve got us scared. Forget the 2 letter State abbreviations (which originally most Americans disliked, but which are used on the net for the same reasons all the other insane abbreviations are) we'll go to counties, and use abbreviations for them.
