Why is it a crime in Canada to be racist? Unless he is specifically inciting violence, he shouldn't be prosecuted.

Why should he be allowed to spew his racist hatred?
My inclination is to say that banning his right to speak his mind on this subject (even if you disagree) is only a short hop from banning his right to "spew his anti-government hate."
Somehow I doubt that's a road you truly wish to go down.
I disagree with what the man says, but I believe he has the right to his opinion, and further, he has the right to at least express that opinion, whether you like it or no.
That does not appear to be the case in Canada, sadly.

What has racism to do with being anti-government? Why should we be fully tolerant towards those who preach intolerance?
2.) because if you let them say things in the public square other people can condemn them for being idiots, or show how they are being stupid.
It's better to have these things aboveboard than to let people just sit back and secretly plot and scheme instead of opening dialogue.
anit-hate speech crimes are as Vel stated above, the first step towards anti-gvt hate speech imprisonment and generally bring to mind shades of 1984-
would you like to be tracked down for saying bad things about say, the French on the internet?
With new technologies, the governments will be able to track those words and statements in 5-10 years... at least ... due to Google and more industrial/business countries indexing and searching.... and ip tracking-
pulling words out of the air. Frankly it's disturbing. I have nothing against government supervision in principle- but in practice it's going to be abused- things said will be twisted/misinterpreted and people will suffer!-->Visit CGN!

He is only being convicted because he is a (former?) first-nations leader.
Any average person wouldn't face charges for saying something like that, and 'main stream' politicians usually have immunity to such things and wouldn't have to face anything except the media.Rethink Refuse Reduce Reuse

Consider an Islamic cleric who preaches day after day that the West is evil, that the United States is Satan, etc.
If the cleric never advocates violences, but simply talks about how the West is out to destroy Islam, etc, should the cleric be allowed to continue?Golfing since 67

To do otherwise would 'chill' conversation and thought- much as Ann Coulter and other rightists in the US immediately label anyone speaking against the US gvt policies as a 'traitor'... imagine what would happen if it became impossible to voice opinions about policies- just like that islamic cleric is doing-he dislikes the policies so therefore he dislikes america... so what- he's working toward change, etc.

1.) well you're certainly a killer in that case, maybe not a murderer- but a killer nonetheless.
2.) Blast the guy on Slander then if what he's saying are lies- don't knock him down on 'hate-speech' If he's stating what he knows or can reasonably be expected to know are facts- then what's the problem?
And if he's just saying opinion- then why can't someone think something? If you illegalize hate speech, then for example, someone couldn't speak out against homosexuality or against islam since it would be 'hate speech against groups.'
President Bush would be guilty of hate speech for calling Iraq part of the 'axis of evil'
(PS: I have no problem with homosexuality or islam... just using them as common examples)-->Visit CGN!

The point, gentlemen, is that everybody who is so against this fellow's position and opinion, is tripping all overthemselves to say how tolerant they are, while displaying gross INTOLERENCE for this individual's position (as evidenced by the burning desire to shut him up). Thus, Dark Cloud's statement.
And, it's one I agree with.
How ironic, to preach such tolerance, and yet, be swift to wish to silence anyone who disagrees....
You may not LIKE what the man says, but you don't have to.
You may not agree with what the man says, but you don't have to.
Those things, however, DO NOT give you the right to dictate to him what he can or cannot think or express. Else, you make yourself no better than him, and reveal your own intolerent nature.
