  • I'm sure you wouldn't want to forbid me from telling a friend "the jews should be killed off" over a beer. I'm fairly sure you'd have a problem if I waved a poster with the same message on the streets. Somewhere between those two you have to draw the line. You're either a free speech fundamentalist, or you're on the slippery slope.
No problem with that- except for the fact that waving a poster on the streets for any reason is usually restricted as solicitation and advertising- therefore you won't see people doing those things except in government-approved marches, etc. ... and as for distribuiting materials to people, nothing's stopping them from doing so now- and yet people don't do it. Thus, besides being equivalent to banning the spread of communist ideals (because communism advocates overthrow of all governments) it's not worth legislating against.

And if the distribuitor is printing lies- then he'll go to jail.
And if he starts a fight- he'll go to jail.
And if he harasses people to take his flyers- he'll go to jail.

Which would seem a rather more drastic restriction on freedom-of-speech than banning a poster likely to ignite a riot ...

Well, I for one have been given a couple far-right and far-left leaflets.

(And then we had those posters someone set up at my high school calling for vigilante violence against neo-nazis. For some reason nothing was ever done about them.)

Since when is there something wrong with banning communism?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

      • Insulting is saying the Jews are evil. Saying its a good thing to kill Jews gfoes beyond "insulting".
Fair enough. Fair enough. That's why it's all right to have a law stating that if someone says "go kill Jews" should be illegal whereas "it's a good thing if Jews die off" isn't.

I don't think he would, actually. I wouldn't, as long as you are giving a speech instructing the listerners they should go out and kill Jews now.
Quhat? It would be less acceptable if I told them to do it tomorrow?

Because it's hate speech advocating violence against the government.

and the reason people can't wave posters on streets randomly is because it is essentially advertising. And advertising to sell something doesn't have as many protections as free speech since it is speech not for ideas, but for products.

And yet...obviously it did not leave you with any lifelong scars, nor does it seem to have suddenly convinced you to go out and overthrow the government, or engage in genocide.

In fact, I'd wager that their net impact on you has been....negligable at best?

You, sir, are making categorical statements on matters of which you know nothing.

Oh yes. We give police protection when the Klan or Nazis march in a city in order to prevent violent altercation.

Tomorrow is sufficiently related to 'do it now'. If its specific then it's a problem. If vague (ie, Jews should be killed... not saying whether the crowd should do it, or the government, or whatever), then leave it.

                          • LC, Granted...I don't know you personally....nor those cursed leaflets' effects on you....but something tells me that I am not, at present, conversating with a genocidal maniac. Time and headlines will inform me whether or not I am correct.

And, having said that, I have seen you post here, and you don't seem an unbalanced sort, given to mass genocidal rages, nor have any of your postings here indicated that you are suddenly rabidly interested in such things.

Unless of course, you're fessing up to such?

Let me get this straight; it being advocacy of violence is a reason against banning it?

If your laws treat waving a poster saying "Kill the Jews" as advertising, your laws are f*cked up.

I think the emphasis was on "the government" part of it .

                                They don't.
