The caste system has been legally banned . And in practice , too , it has disappeared in the cities . Though I agree , Manu's code ( which established the caste system ) was as f***ed up as it can get . Thankfully , we're mostly over that .
What is interesting in the latest religion-vs-common sense fight is that now religion is even more cornered than ever before . Like the printing press was vital to the Christian renaissance , the Internet is going to be one of the driving forces behind the Islamic modernisation . The point being that the internet is an order of magnitude more disruptive than books , and thus will force a much faster resolution of the dispute . "Faster" here can also have some very , very bloody consequences . I'd recommend the civilised world to sit back and treat the whole thing as an elaborate re-enactment of the Renaissance , only from within a Muslim context . It might be too painful otherwise .Comment

I think Islamic FUNDAMENTALIST law is messed and needs progressive change. Dude, I'm just frigging shocked that a local law system can override a country-wide edict. Uniformity in law and order is probably the best bet a country can have.

Record is meaningless. Islam has a record of being one of the cultures that developed the arts and sciences.
