Why? Even if an Islamist government takes over, who else are they going to sell their oil to? They need to eat. They might bull**** about raising the price of oil, but they know that they can't afford to be ridiculous about it without undercutting their own position.

Last time I looked, eating sand didn't work.

Saddam Hussein was selling you oil up until you invaded his country. He had no alternative.

Why do you persist with these insane fantasies about the way the world works?

You have no choice. The United States has been exposed by the Iraq war. As long as that war persists, you will not be able to recruit enough soldiers to intervene anywhere else without instituting a draft, and a draft is political poison.

If they take SA, then they win this one.

The Iranians caused us lots of long-term oil supply problems. The Saudis are a tougher nut to crack.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

But there is no reason to think an Islamist victory in SA is imminent, so why care at all?

Again, what are they going to eat? That country exists on its oil exports. Without them they don't have jack to eat. They can't but sell it to the highest bidder. This "oil weapon" stuff is pure fantasy. There are far too many people living and eating in SA now for it to be effective.

Even if not imminent, the risk is non-zero.

If you want to guarantee your oil supply, you need money. Even mortal enemies of the US like Saddam Hussein wilt in the face of money. If they didn't, their people would overthrow them after missing a couple of meals.

                    Risk of what?

THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO STOP SELLING THEIR OIL TO YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS THE MONEY!!!!

                    Fact.

Again, what are they going to eat?
I hear you, but some fundy administrations in the past have acted irrationally, at least in large part. They could act to push up the price now, even though that is not in their long-term interest.

EVEN IRAN HAS NO CHOICE. WHAT ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO SELL?

Not half as irrationally as the population of SA will when they miss a couple of feeds.

At this point, Saudi Arabia would only have to drop production a couple million barrels a day and the world would be in recession, dude.

No Saudi would starve in this scenario, although their long-term interests wouldn't be served. In the short term, Saudi Arabia might even be better off.

And there you have it. The increased price would make alternative sources more affordable, and that would screw up SA for ever.

Don't make the mistake of thinking the Islamists are stupid. They aren't. Their whole project of revitalizing the Islamic (well, really the Arab) world would be imperiled by such a move.

You know that and I know that. But that's a reasonably long-term process. They might want to stick it to the infidel for a while in the meantime.
